Typically quiet and soft spoke, most people think she is stuck up because she doesn't talk to many people. In all reality she is actually pretty shy. She's always been a timid person and she doesn't have much confidence in herself. Her lack of confidence is due to her past and years of abuse. She tries to push past it but can't quite get there all the way. She constantly finds herself doubting herself, even when she knows perfectly well that she can do something. She hates this about herself and tries to change but its so deeply rooted in her that she isn't sure she really can.
For the most part she goes pretty much unnoticed, not really causing trouble or looking for fights. But she does have her opinions and when people question them she will stand up for what she believes in, if given enough pushing and prodding. This is often followed by mental scolding and nervousness once any sort of attention gets turned to her. She's a bit submissive, never really wanting to draw attention to herself out of fear of some sort of punishment. She can stand up for herself but has a hard time doing so until she's really pushed. Then she explodes, getting right into someone's face if need be. She hates this but she has a hard time keeping this in check. Its her natural defensive mechanism to make herself seem more dangerous so she can keep people away. She has trouble opening up to people and has a strong distrust of men of any age. She tends to hang on the fringes of the campus society, keeping everyone at arms length.
She has a passion for music, drawing, writing, and animals, though she doesn't usually seem the type to even like animals. She is more creative then she seems, often enjoying time spent writing, playing music, etc. This is one way she deals with stress and often uses these activities to get away from the world. This is the only time she really opens up. Most other times she puts up a cold outer shell to hide behind. She has a good voice and a talent for learning music quickly. However she is also very interested in science oriented things, mostly biology, life, or animal sciences.
Even though she is quiet she has a bit of a rebellious side. She doesn't like being told what to do or being bossed around. She doesn't care about the norms either, not bothering to try to fit in with a specific group or clique. This shows through in her sense of style and her snake bite piercings. Despite her self doubt she is very determined, many would even venture to call her stubborn. She fights and tries very hard, to prove to herself that she really can do things just as well or better then anyone else. She hates giving up though she does know when enough really is enough.
She has a lot of regrets, things she blames on herself even though she had no control over those events. In her view if anything goes wrong it usually is because of something she did, its her way of making sense of things, she figures if there's a reason for it she can understand it better. She suffers from depression on a daily basis, some days struggling just to get out of bed, she doesn't sleep well, often up until the early hours of the morning before finally being able to get a few uneasy moments of sleep. She's easily stressed but keeps it all bottled up until it slowly seeps out, usually in the form of her inability to really sit still and the more stressed she is the more she moves around. To give herself some sense of control she cuts, something she has tried dozens of times to stop but always falling back into it.
To sum it all up she's a quiet timid person that puts up walls to keep people out. She acts tough though on the inside she's damaged and doesn't really trust many people. She hates who she is at times and wishes more then anything to be more confident. But she has a hard time doing so because of her past.
Most of her life has been spent growing up in England, giving her a rather noticeable accent, one that always leads to questions about her past that she would rather not even think about let alone answer. Growing up wasn't the easiest thing for her, in fact her existence shouldn't have even occurred. Her mother was a single mom, barely 18 and a senior in high school. She and some friends had managed to get into a club and with fake ids got drinks at the bar. That was where her mother met the man that is her father, though she has never met him. Her mother had been drinking heavily that night and he took advantage of the fact that she wasn't thinking clearly and though everything was consensual her mother regrets everything she did that lead to her getting pregnant.
Her mother always resented Rayne from the day she found out she was expecting to the day Rayne left. Her normal days as a senior in high school were over. She had to deal with the consequences of her decisions and she didn't deal with them well. For a large portion of her pregnancy she drank and did drugs. The doctors were amazed that the baby was born pretty much unharmed and not addicted to anything. Though it did have some effects on her. She was born quite early, five weeks before she was due and she was very small. Her lungs were underdeveloped and she had to spend a few weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit before she was able to go home.
Her mom tried to sober up but couldn't deal with the fact that she now had another being to take care of. In the beginning she tried hard but it was too much for her to handle alone and her own parents had pretty much disowned her after finding out she was pregnant. After awhile she began to neglect her daughter, spending more time partying and being with her friends then taking care of her young daughter. When Rayne was two her mother started to date an older man. He had a steady job and could support her so she stayed with him despite the fact that he was abusive both towards her and her young daughter. They were only together for a few months before her mother married him despite what he did to them. In the beginning it wasn't so bad, he was merely very controlling of every aspect of their lives. In fact for the most part Rayne was forgotten, it wasn't the best way for a child to spend their early years, many believe this is why she is has so many problems dealing with the social aspects of her life, she didn't have enough of it at a young age. By the time she had started school though it moved from mere neglect to actual physical abuse.
School became an escape from the beatings she received at home, and though she was often teased and bullied she kept her focus on learning, set on one day having a better life then the one she did now. When she was in her early teens he would tell her she was stupid just like her mom and would end up the same, dropping out of school because she got herself knocked up and ending up with a little brat to take care of. He constantly belittled her and she, still being rather young and impressionable, believed him.
When she hit high school it really began to take a toll on her. She didn't have any friends to rely on, no one really understood her so she just kept to herself instead. Day after day she would sit by herself, drawing and listening to music, sometimes writing her own lyrics. Her grades were good but she still felt worthless, with no one to acknowledge her accomplishments she soon stopped really caring about everything, letting things slip here and there until she just flat out stopped doing any work. Things got worse at home, it wasn't just her step dad anymore but her mother as well, who took her own frustration out on Rayne, and to deal with it she began to cut. Her arms were always covered in scars and she hid them the best she could, so well no one found out about them until much later. Finally she couldn't handle it anymore, deciding it would be better for everyone if she wasn't in the picture anymore since everything was her fault anyway, with her gone everything would be fixed. So she attempted suicide, sneaking a blade into school with her. However her plan didn't go as she had expected. Another girl came into the bathroom and saw the blood spreading across the tile floor. Her scream alerted a teacher in the hall and an ambulance was called.
She spent a week in the hospital, constantly watched for fear of her attempting suicide again. They forced antidepressants into her and she met with a therapist daily. Finally out of frustration she told them of the situation at home. Child services was called in but while the investigation was going on she had to remain in the home. Her step father was good at hiding things and her mother was so submissive toward him that she never spoke a word against him. They both just said that Rayne was seeking attention and that's why she tried to kill herself and why she said that her step father was abusive. The investigators believed her parents, two grown adults, over her. It was then she really closed herself off from everything, if her speaking didn't do her any good then she just wouldn't bother with it anymore.
As soon as the investigation was closed and they were safe from discovery things got worse. She was locked in her room, meals brought to her on occasion though there was no regular schedule. Her step father told the school that he didn't think it wise for her to go back in her unstable mental condition and so she was yanked out. The abuse got worse too. She was now beaten daily where as before it had been at random, usually when he had been drinking. But he was in a constant rage now, complaining about every little thing, her constant presence in the house, their lack of money, though her was the one at fault for that, and his main issue was that her mother was no longer satisfying him. So he turned to her, using her as he would some prostitute he found on the streets. Her efforts to fight back were useless, she wasn't strong enough to do much to stop him. Finally she lashed out against him, stabbing him in the leg with a razor blade when he came to her room one night and then running. She was found wandering the streets by police and after a full examination was done by a doctor her story was finally believed.
Charges were pressed against both her parents. Her mother got a lighter sentence, as she was also a victim. Her step father was given a heavier sentence though his lawyer managed to plea bargain it down a bit. Rayne was placed in foster care and jumped from house to house as she never really fit in anywhere. During this time she wasn't really a troublemaker per se, rather she got into a lot of fights with other kids her age, though she rarely started them, she just finished them. She had mandatory therapy meetings every week, and she hated them. She never was the type of person to open up to others, let alone to some professional that didn't really care about her, they only wanted to get her fixed up to be the perfect child. Finally she was allowed to stop going when her newest set of foster parents, the nicest ones she had had so far and ones that actually seemed to care about her, decided she might do better if they got her away from everything she had grown up around. They decided to send to Lux Lucis Academy in New York. They got her in through the rehabilitation program, which she still hates due to the fact that she still has to see a therapist and take antidepressants, but the change of pace and environment has proved to be a bit helpful. Her grades are high again and she seems to focus on that more now that she doesn't have to deal with a home life with her parents. However, she still cuts and has a lot to work through.
