He's very easy-going by nature. It's one of the traits that allows him to make friends very easily, even if all of them are kept at arms' length. He is passive, but don't take that to mean that he is a pushover. If he suspects you of using him or talking behind his back, he will ignore everything you say.
Grim is very intelligent, even if he doesn't believe it. Aside from the classroom, he also has street smarts. He is good at thinking of how to get out of a dangerous situation quickly or how to get what he wants out of a person. But it is his ability to take a punch and still stand strong that makes any part of him somewhat admirable.
When he likes someone romantically, he tries to impress them in subtle ways, and he has a desire to be close to them. he is tentative in this area, as he's never had a real relationship before, just casual sex. He is often too scared to admit his feelings for fear of rejection... and the fact he believes he's not good enough for anything functional.
Beneath his calm facade, he is damaged- severely so. His self esteem is incredibly low- and it seems that won't be changing any time soon. He struggles with anorexia- always seeing someone different than who he is. He will fast until he feels too weak and listless to do anything, often coping with painkillers and other drugs to get him through until he just has to eat. He has been hospitalized twice before because of it, once during his sophomore year that prevented him from entering a music composition competition.
Well, the first thing you'd notice about Grim is his thick accent. You see, Grim spent most of his childhood in Iceland, which is his native home. However, his family moved to Kansas in a rural city when he was nine. But moving the family wasn't going to solve all of their problems. His father had anger issues and his mother was an alcoholic. Though his father worked to provide for them, none of the family was ever good enough.
Grim grew used to taking the verbal and sometimes physical abuse from his father to protect his sister who was younger than himself by two years. And as it worsened, so did his withdrawl from society. Though he managed to keep his grades up and excel in piano, his social stability declined. He began to develop extreme image issues and began to alter his appearance however he could.
It started out as wearing heavy eye-makeup to conceal the black eyes, but soon it turned into a habit for him, something he did without noticing. He got a tattoo when he was twelve thanks to a bullshit fake id, but it landed him in the hospital with a high fever from which he nearly didn't recover. His own life doesn't matter to him- not really- but it stung deeply that no one came to visit him. He suspected his sister would have, but she wasn't allowed.
Things only continued to get worse. Grim will never own up or admit to any of the happenings inside the home, but the extensive abuse left scars, both emotional and physical on him.
He found a way out, however, as he entered high school. He applied to the boarding school in hopes of getting away from home. His sister was smart, she spent most of her time at friends' houses, and he was confident that she would be all right. And he knew that if he didn't get out then, he never would.
And he's done well blending in ever since. He found a new love in the violin upon coming to the school and quickly changed his area of concentration to it, though he continues his keyboarding classes out of habit- not to mention he greatly appreciates the synthesizing abilities the electric variety offers.
